P7C visit to Hutchinson Engineering

24th Mar 2026
Today we went on a school trip to Hutchinson Engineering in Kilrea and it was so much fun! We got to learn all about engineering while we walked around on a special guided tour. We had a fact‑finding sheet to fill in as we explored the factory.

Hutchinson Engineering is a big factory in Kilrea where people use machines to make metal parts for lots of different things. They don’t usually make the whole machine—they are like expert builders who create the important metal pieces that other companies need.

They cut and shape metal using powerful machines like lasers and use welding equipment to link pieces of metal together. They build strong metal parts that help make things like buses, tractors, recycling machines, and even electric and hydrogen vehicles.  Big companies all over the world use the pieces Hutchinson Engineering makes to build their own machines—like Caterpillar, Wrightbus, and Terex.

The best part of the trip was when each of us got to try the welding simulator - we got marks out of 100 for how well we could weld pieces of metal together - some scored higher than others!

Thank you to Hutchinson Engineering for a great morning!
