Mummification in P5B
13th Nov 2025
As part of our WAU topic on the Egyptians, P5B carried out an exciting science experiment to discover what happens to fruit when it is covered in a salty mixture—just like the Ancient Egyptians did with natron to prevent bodies from rotting. The Egyptians used this process during mummification after removing the internal organs, drying the body thoroughly to preserve it. To understand this, we recreated the drying stage by making our own version of natron and using it to mummify pieces of fruit. This experiment helped us learn how salt draws out moisture and slows decay.
