March  Newsletter for Year 5

Dear Parents,

We hope that everyone had a great rest over mid-term.  Most children are well settled back to work.  Please encourage your child to continue with their best effort for the remainder of the year and stay focussed on their work.  We would like to remind everyone about the importance of wearing school uniform each day.

Curriculum Content:
Numeracy – Pupils will continue with division.  They will divide HTU by a single digit – linking to multiplication facts.  They will also be solving problems using division.  Pupils will begin the topic of handling data.  The will collect “real” data within their class and they will present their findings using pie charts and a variety of graphs.  They will also extract information from simple timetables.

Language and Literacy – Pupils will continue to develop their language and literacy skills through a whole class experience and within groups.  They will be writing their own play-script.  They will also be introduced to the conventions of debating and differing points of view.  Pupils will scan texts for important information.

The World Around Us The theme for this term is Ireland.  They will become aware of the origins and traditions of the Irish Culture and how it has changed over time. The children will be preparing for and celebrating the Irish Culture through the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Religion - The Alive 0-5 programme will incorporate the story of St. Patrick’s life and bringing Christianity to Ireland.  Children will be preparing for the Holy Thursday Mass.

P.D.M.U – Pupils will be encouraged to practise the art of active listening.  They will also become aware of the importance of family and friends.
