Curriculum Content for February
Literacy
This month our Talking and Listening activities are related to our topic of Ireland as an Island, its place in Europe and the world and its products and services. We will continue to provide opportunities for children to participate in shared, guided and independent reading. Please continue to hear your child read aloud each night and encourage them to sound out new words. Children will be given opportunities this month to write for a variety of purposes to include shared writing about Ireland and Greenland and individual writing retelling a story about Mythical Ireland. Please encourage your child to learn their spellings each week using the Look, Say, Trace, Cover, Write and Check approach.
Numeracy
In class we will explore time practically with individual clocks. We will send individual clocks home for practical home works. We will continue to revise half past and o’clock in analogue. We will introduce quarter past times and tell the time one hour before/after. We will study time language e.g. days, months and seasons and sequence them correctly.
World Around Us
In World Around us we will be continuing our study of Ireland as an island. We will identify plants and animals of Ireland and compare and contrast them with plants and animals from other Islands. We will continue to enjoy stories from Mythical Ireland. We will complete a K.W.L. grid (what I Know, what I Want to find out and what I have Learnt) on our topic of Islands.
Personal Development and Mutual Understanding (PDMU)
This month we will discuss times when we have not shown love and how this affects others around us. We will look at ways to say sorry properly. We will list the qualities of a good friend and discuss what life would be like without friends. Please remember healthy eating days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
P.E.
On Thursdays P3A & P3C will continue with the Fundamental Movement Skills Programme. Please ensure your child comes to school in full P.E uniform on these days. On Tuesdays P3B will continue to work on balance and looking at ways they can travel on different body parts.
The Arts
Children will illustrate their individual stories depicting characters, scenes and events from Mythical Ireland. Children, in groups, will select instruments to suit characters and events from stories and present them to the class. We will continue to learn seasonal songs and songs from Alive O programme. Children will make Valentine’s Day cards.
