June Newsletter
The children have started our new topic The Seaside. It would be helpful if you could encourage your child to talk about what they are doing in class.
Maths: The children are now counting beyond 10 but learning about number composition within 10. Keep practising with the mental maths, talking about more, less and the same as. Try to find opportunities for your child to count/practice their mental maths every day. Children should also be able to spot numbers in the home/environment. Continue to practice number formation to 10 and beyond. On good days this can be done outside using chalk/ shells/ pebbles. The children will be using 1p coins at the ice-cream shop. We will be revising sorting, pattern, time and shape.
Talking and listening: Talk about the signs of Summer around us. Talk about all the things you would need for a visit to the seaside. What would you see at the seaside? Develop vocabulary. Talking about our holidays/days out, planned and previous!
Reading: The children have covered nearly all the letters and sounds of the alphabet. They should be able to recognise the letters by sight and sound. We would expect them at this stage to be able to give a word beginning with a particular sound. Your child should be blending sounds together to read and write simple words. They will be becoming more independent in their reading, using the pictures, sound cues and what makes sense. Encourage reading around them when they are out and about. Lots of storytime over the Summer holidays!
Writing: The children should be able to experiment with all different kinds of writing. Encourage them to make lists, sentences, posters, cards, stories etc. Try to make sure they are writing from top to bottom and forming letters correctly. Are they using capital letters in the right places?
The Arts: Lots of songs and stories on the seaside/Summer theme. The children are engaged in seaside role play. They will be experimenting with lots of media to produce Summer artwork.
World around us: The children are learning about wet/dry sand and water in this theme. The children will have the opportunity to reinforce everything they found out about the farm on our school trip. We look forward to hearing about how the beanstalks progress!!
Physical development:. The children will be practising for fun sports activities and learning how to work in teams. Sports day will be on the 18th of June. Sports will be in Meadowbank Arena. Don’t forget the children should be dropped off and collected from Meadowbank Arena.
I.C.T.: The children are continuing to work on logging on and using the keyboard.
P.D.M.U.: The children have made great progress this year in their personal development. Lots of children are showing great independence by lining up, sorting their own folders and organising themselves and their belongings. Well done. The children know they will be moving on to P.2 soon and more will be expected of them in terms of independence and attitude to work. Please do your bit by reinforcing this at home.
Alive-o: The children will be talking about ‘My World in Summer’.
The school trip to Finvoy Fun Farm will be on Thursday 3rd of June. More details to follow.
School will finish for the Summer break at 11.00am on Wednesday 30th June.
The children have enjoyed their P.1 year and will take away many positive memories. Thank-you. Wishing everyone a happy and safe Summer break!
