March Newsletter

Our new topic is food. The children will be going on a visit to Lidl to look at the variety of fruit and vegetables available. They will bring this experience into the classroom by setting up our own greengrocers and using the vegetables to make soup. Encourage your child to help you when out food shopping. Can they name the different fruit and vegetables? Can they tell you where vegetables come from.

Maths: The children will be working up to number 10. Lots of practice with the mental maths, numbers before, after, in between. Counting forwards and backwards from different starting points. Can they spot missing numbers in a number-line. Can they make sets of 8/9 etc. They will be touch counting and making amounts to 10. They will be practising number formation to 10. The children will be looking at different ways to pay in a shop. Let your child look at your purse and talk about your coins, card and paper money. Can they sort the coins by colour, size and shape?

Talking and listening: Lots of talk about fruit and vegetables and where our food comes from. They will be tapping out the syllables in the fruit/vegetable names.

Reading: We will continue with our letters and sounds. Please take time to look at the alphabet and go over the letter names, their sounds, actions or songs and the trigger word beginning with that letter. Play lots of alphabet games. ( I spy, What does the word hat begin with? Give me a word that begins with b. ) We are starting to blend sounds to make and read new words. Encourage your child to use robot speak to sound out a word. Use written words like am, at, is, in, it, sat, pin, tap, pat, man. If your child is bringing home a simple reading book, try some of these ideas. Let them track the text as they read. Use the pictures when they meet an unknown word. Look at the initial sound of the word. If your child does bring home a reading book it is important that it is returned in the folder. Books are limited in number, please look after them.

Writing: The children are at all different stages. Allow them to practise their letter formation, small letters and capital letters. Encourage your child to write simple sentences using some familiar keywords. Here is a carrot./I like apples. Some children will be beginning to write words they are familiar with. Use robot speak to spell simple words like c-a-t, p-i-n,
r-a-t, i-s, a-m.

The Arts: The children will be singing songs about fruit and veg. They will be imitating and exploring rhythm. They will be printing with and making/drawing pictures of real fruit and veg. The children will use different media and make choices about the most appropriate media. They will be taking on the roles of the shopkeeper and customer in our play shop.

World around us: We are now focusing on food. We will tasting fruit and veg. and talking about our favourites. We will be looking at where our foods come from. The children will be noticing what features they can see on the way to Lidl. We will be learning about how to be safe on a busy road. Please encourage your child to take notice of these things when they are out and about. By asking them questions you will be encouraging them to question and think.

Physical development: Encourage your child to be physically active every day. Lots of practice moving in different ways. Practice your hopping and balancing at home.

I.C.T.: The children are continuing to work on digital presentation. This includes presenting digital pictures as stories, mini-movies and recording their voices.
